EVOLUTION OF DANCE

The natural impulse to dance may have existed in early primates before they evolved into humans. First archaeological proof of dance comes from the 9,000-year-old cave paintings in India. Modern dance history in Europe started with the Renaissance, when many new dances were invented.


THE FIRST RECOGNITIONS OF DANCING

The first recorded dancing is among the ancient civilizations of the middle east and India and among the aboriginal people of the Americas, Australia, and Africa. The Hindu god Shiva, known as Nataraja, Lord of the Dance, is portrayed as a many-armed being balanced on one leg.


THE POSSIBLE OLDEST DANCE FORM

Historians consider the dance form that is today known as belly dance as the oldest form. It originated 6,000 years ago and was practised by many ancient cultures. Originally, it was performed only by women, as a form of goddess worship, and to celebrate womanhood.


OLDEST FORM OF CLASSICAL DANCE

Bharatanatyam, also known as the mother of all other classical dance styles, is considered as the oldest dance form in the country India that originated from the temple dancers in Tamil Nadu.

  • The close connection of Hindu religion to dance, can be seen in the countless Bollywood movies that all celebrate dancing.

  • First ballroom dance that was ever created is Italian Viennese Waltz.

  • Famous modern dance Cha-Cha originated from Cuba.
